Monument

A hex island swallowed by the dark. Walk it, claim it, and raise a monument before anyone else does — up to six tribes, one turn at a time, over days.

A board game that waits for you.

A hexagonal island sits in the dark. Up to six tribes walk out into it, and a tile only becomes land once someone has set foot on it — so every tile you take is one nobody else can have. Turns come when they come, a game runs over days rather than an evening, and by the end a monument stands where the dark used to be.

How it works.

  1. Open a table.

Start a game or join one. Each tribe begins with a few tiles at the edge of the water and nothing else.

  2. Walk into the dark.

On your turn your tribe moves out and turns tiles up. Where two tribes meet, the borders start to bite.

  3. Climb the rungs.

Research lifts your tribe through Mind, Culture, Tools and Food. Every rung tells you what it does before you buy it.

  4. Raise the monument.

A monument costs 33 food and scores 30 points. Stack it slab by slab, where everyone can see it.

Six tribes, one island.

Monument started life as a board game, and it still plays by that game's rulebook and cards. Six tribes walk the dark:

  • The River People
  • The Ash Makers
  • The Long Walkers
  • The Stone Hand
  • The Night Fire
  • The Salt Path

A Monument board mid-game: a hex island, half of it still dark

Deadlines land on the second

Timed turns used to be checked every five seconds. Now the server sets one alarm for the next deadline and sleeps until it rings. A three-day game costs nothing between turns, and a five-minute one ends exactly when it should.

Back to the rulebook

The original board game's rulebook and cards turned up, and Monument now plays by them. Tokens take the rulebook's values, mining costs 1 instead of 10, a monument is 33 food and 30 points, the technology rungs carry the cards' names, the first rung costs one food instead of being dealt, and the panel tells you what every rung does.

Monument fits in your pocket

Pinch to zoom, two fingers to pan, and a tap that is never mistaken for a drag. Tap a hex and its choices rise as a sheet from the bottom of the screen, while the tribe list and the score step out of the way until you've decided.

The island is waiting.
